Designing Your Perfect Kitchen

Below are a few basic kitchen design and planning principals to be mindful off from stage one of your planning process.

  1. PLAN YOUR TRIANGLE
Always try and keep your sink, hob/oven and fridge within easy distance of each other. Your "work triangle" (fridge to hob/cooker to sink) should be as small as possible to allow you easy and unobstructed movement around your kitchen.
  2. THINK ABOUT YOUR SINK
Even with having a dishwasher in a kitchen, its surprising how much time is spent at the sink - in your initial plan, wherever possible, locate the sink in your kitchen by the window so you have something to look out at when you have your hands in the bowl!
  3. WORKTOP SPACE WITH ROOM TO COOK
Designs on tall unit use and planning tall storage places should be located at the end of worktop runs. This way, your kitchen will have maximum worktop space to make cooking easier and less stressful.
  4. THE EXTRACTOR FACTOR
In order to help stop cooking smells from escaping the kitchen, try and plan your layout so that the hob and extractor fan located on an outside wall. This will enable extraction of any kitchen odours straight outside.
  5. WASHING MACHINES & DISHWASHERS
Most kitchens have washing machines and maybe a dishwasher too. Whether using integrated appliances (hidden behind a kitchen door front) or free standing appliances, be sure to plan your design so that these appliances are located as close to the kitchen sink as possible.
